Haskovo overcome Sportsman 1959 with 118:115 in the climax of the quarterfinals in the tournament for The BBL Cup. The two teams played an extremely contested match in Pazardzhik, needing overtime to determine the last participant in the Final Four in Vidin in a month's time.

The basis of the success was the trio Ivaylo Tonev, Tihomir Zhelev and Dinko Hristov, scored a total of 96 of the winners' points. Jelev also scored an impressive 8 triples.

The match began at a very high speed, with the two teams repeatedly exchanging the lead. Led by Jimmy Hunt, scored 15 points in the first half alone, however Sportsman managed to take an advantage and after ten minutes of play was leading with 31:24. The team maintained a lead of several points in the second period as well, but thanks mostly to the strong performances of Ivaylo Tonev, Haskovo kept a close distance and at the break reduced to 45:49.

The defense remained in the background in the second half as well. The basketball players of Yanko Zhelev they made a complete turnaround in the middle of the third period, and before the final quarter they led 79:75. In her Sportsman started with 8 unanswered points and went ahead again, but two consecutive triples gave the lead back to the opponent. Extremely dramatic minutes followed in which Haskovo maintained a fragile advance but Boris Matrakov scored in the last second and sent the match to overtime at 101:101.

The team from South region scored 7 straight points at the start of overtime and again had the lead but with 8.7 seconds left Gerasim Nikolov was fouled on the three-pointer. He scored two of three free throws and restored the tie for 115:115. At the very end, though Tihomir Zhelev again signed with a famous three and brought success to his team.

Ivaylo Tonev was top scorer for the winners with 36 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists. He played a great match Tihomir Zhelev with 32 points (8 triples) and 10 assists. It was also close to a double-double Dinko Hristov with 28 points and 8 rebounds, all three playing 45 minutes. Vangel Iliev added 13 points.

For Sportsman Jimmy Hunt scored 28 points. Boris Matrakov has 21 and 13 rebounds. Simeon Tsenov has 20 points and 7 rebounds. Ivan Tsenov recorded 18 points and 7 rebounds. Gerasim Nikolov is 16 points. Dragomir Pavlov add 12.

BULGARIAN BASKETBALL LEAGUE (BBL) is a national basketball league established in 2016. FROM 2020. In recent years, the League has become one of the largest team championships in Bulgaria.

BBL A group, and from 2022 and B group are included as official state championships to the Bulgarian Basketball Federation. Thus, basketball in Bulgaria acquired a complete pyramidal structure. The league is structured and takes place on a regional tournament basis in four regions - West, South, East and Center.
